It all began with one simple idea: everyone deserves a place to breathe.
In the early 1960s, Finland was changing. Cities were growing, life was becoming busier, and people felt an increasing need to step away from the rush — to reconnect with their roots, nature and with one another. At the same time, rural communities were looking for new ways to stay vibrant and bring in additional income from rural tourism.
In 1967, Lomaliitto — the predecessor of Lomarengas — set out to solve both needs.
The goal was twofold: to make Finnish countryside holidays available for wider audience, and to support the vitality of rural areas by offering farmers and local hosts an opportunity to earn additional income.
This simple but powerful idea became the foundation of the Finnish cottage holiday as we know it today.

Growing with Finnish cottage culture
For Finns, spending time at the cottage is much more than a holiday tradition — it’s a way to maintain a deep and meaningful relationship with nature. Even city-dwellers see cottage life as a way to stay grounded, reset and pass along an important cultural value to the next generation. This is why cottage holidays in Finland are loved by families, couples and groups of friends alike.
Today, "mökkeily" (=cottage life ) offers something increasingly rare: genuine togetherness and presence. It’s a place for slow mornings, quiet conversations and evenings without notifications — a perfect opportunity for a gentle digital detox.
As these needs grew, so did we. From lake districts to the fells of Lapland, from the archipelago to remote wilderness regions, Lomarengas expanded its selection to include a wide range of destinations in areas close to nature, activity centres and national parks.
From a few hundred to thousands — always handpicked
As demand increased, so did the expectations of travellers. To ensure clarity and trust, Lomarengas introduced a transparent quality classification system and a core practice that still defines us today: every property is inspected in person by our trained specialists.
Over the decades, our selection has grown from a modest list of rural lodgings to thousands of properties across Finland, including:
Each place reflects a piece of Finland — its landscapes, traditions and the people who care for them.
Why we do what we do
We believe that cottage holidays enrich people’s lives. They offer calm, space and a meaningful connection to nature — something that stays with you long after your trip ends.
For travellers, we provide a reliable and safe way to experience Finland at its most authentic. For cottage owners, we offer visibility, support and a trusted partnership — making it easy to rent out a property while helping keep rural regions active and thriving.
For Finland, cottage tourism sustains local livelihoods, encourages responsible nature travel and keeps cherished traditions alive.
Today — and the future
Lomarengas is now the home of Finnish holiday homes for visitors from all over the world. What began as a small idea has grown into a trusted nationwide service that connects travellers, cottage owners and the beauty of Finnish nature.
We continue the same mission that started in 1967: bringing people closer to Finnish nature in a way that is respectful, accessible and sustainable. As international interest grows and new generations discover cottage life, we remain committed to quality, clarity and the values our story was built on.
